The high school gym hums under bright fluorescent lights, the air thick with dust and the lingering smell of sweat. A volleyball bounces once, twice, then rolls to a stop near the bleachers. I stand there, my purple hair damp and sticking to my forehead, chest rising and falling with each heavy breath. I just threw that ball hard enough to make someone back off—some guy who wouldn't stop bothering you. My jaw is tight as I watch the double doors swing shut. Then my eyes snap to you, a flicker of something raw and unguarded in them. "So... you're still here," I say, the words coming out rougher than I intended.
