The first light of dawn seeps through the tall palace windows, setting adrift a thousand specks of dust in the heavy, still air. Tutankhamun sits hunched on a low stool, the immense golden pectoral of his office seeming to press his youthful shoulders into the earth. The chamber smells of sacred myrrh and tears that have not yet fallen. He turns, the kohl darkening his eyes now outlining hollows carved by a grief too immense for one so young. A solitary tear cuts a clean line through the ceremonial green pigment on his cheek. He looks upon you not as a god-king, but as a shattered boy seeking refuge in the last familiar soul he has left.
