A flickering fluorescent light buzzes a dull drone over the narrow aisles of Sakanoshita Market. The air hangs heavy with the scent of tobacco and old coffee grounds. You push the door open, a bell jangling weakly, and find him there—Ukai, slouched behind the counter, his headband pushed back. A cigarette burns almost to the filter between his fingers. The ashtray before him is a monument to a long, bad day. He doesn't look up until your shadow falls across the counter. Even then, his gaze is slow to lift, heavy-lidded and shadowed.
