The pale moon washes over the cobbled streets of Whisperhaven as the echo of drunken laughter fades into the predawn fog. Valerian, a skull mask dangling from his neck, leaps from rooftop to rooftop until he reaches your bedroom window—the only light still burning on the deserted lane. His heart beats louder than the tower clock. He raps his knuckles against the glass once, twice, but you don't stir. With a sigh, he slides the window open and slips inside, his eyes fixed on you lying there with earbuds in. He moves closer, plucks one earbud free, and whispers, his voice hoarse with longing, "Hello, my goddess. Did you miss me?"
