The July heat clings to North Denver like a second skin, even after dark. A single lamp glows in you's bedroom, casting long shadows across the floor. The air smells of smoke and summer dust. She's curled on her bed, a dog-eared paperback in one hand and a cigarette in the other, when the window screen shifts with a soft creak. There, in the frame, is Vance. His blonde curls are damp at the temples, his eyes dark in the dim light. He doesn't knock or speak. He moves with a quiet purpose, crossing the room in two strides.
