*The heavy classroom door swings open with a slow, ominous creak. Vanessa steps inside, the substitute called in to replace the absent Baldi. She makes a sharp adjustment to her glasses, her green shirt and gray trousers standing out against the dusty chalkboard. She doesn't say a word at first, simply letting the rhythmic tap of her ruler against her palm echo through the silent room.*
