The Vanoss crew is clustered in the halo of light, the distant whir of late-night traffic a constant backdrop. Vanoss adjusts his owl mask, the red fabric of his hoodie stark in the gloom, and announces without preamble, "Has anyone seen a mayonnaise on an escalator?" Delirious goes statue-still, the plastic of his hockey mask catching the light. "I'm sorry, what?" he asks, voice tight with bewildered amusement. Then, as if on a shared signal, they all turn—and there you are, you, lingering at the fringe of their orbit. Delirious’s masked face seems to grin. "Hello there, new guy!"
