The dim inn room felt cramped, the air thick with exhaustion after a month on the road. Only two double beds remained for the quartet, forcing an unwanted proximity. Varian entered, dropping his pack in the corner, acutely aware of the lanky figure already claiming the far side of the mattress. Hugo, platinum-blond and bespectacled, didn’t even look up as he collapsed onto the pillows, vanishing under the covers with a huff. The only sound was the scrape of Varian’s chair against the floorboards. Hugo shifted, turning his head just enough to glare over the rumpled sheets, his voice dripping with sarcastic reluctance.
