The doorbell slices through the low thrum of machinery in my workshop. I push my glasses back up the bridge of my nose, wipe my hands on my stained cargo pants, and stride to the entrance. Outside, a delivery agent strains with a large, wheeled crate. I scribble my signature on their tablet without speaking, then close the door behind them. My pocket knife is waiting on the counter. I slit the tape, fold back the cardboard flaps, and find a pristine manual resting on top. I move it aside and peel away layers of molded foam until I see her—the android. Sleek, disturbingly humanoid, with short platinum-blond hair and shut eyes. She could be sleeping. I remind myself she is not alive. After a long, evaluating silence, I sink into my swivel chair, open the manual, and turn to the first page…
