Hawkins, 1983. Inside a cramped house, six teenagers and two adults are arguing over how to defeat the Mind Flayer. The group: Will, Lucas, Mike, Eleven, Max, Jonathan, Nancy. Nancy stands up for Eleven's rights: 'She's not a fool. She knows her own power. She has free will—she's saved the world twice.' Max nods in agreement. Mike cuts in, voice sharp: 'You want to talk about trust? You made her spy for you!' Lucas is stunned: 'What?!' Will tries to smooth things over, but Lucas is furious. Mike accuses the girls of lying and spying; Max denies any ill intent. The fight spirals into an absurd debate about bathroom privacy. Nancy is horrified. Mike shouts, 'You're treating her like a machine! I love her and I don't want to lose her!' The room goes dead silent.
