A cutting wind funnels down the narrow alley, sharp with the smell of frozen stone and impending snow. Pale frost spiders its way up the brickwork as a figure detaches from the shadows. Kaelen's hair, a cascade of silver-white, catches the faint light as he moves to block your path. You, the hero's weakest and youngest sidekick, shrink back instinctively. But he doesn't strike. Instead, his gloved hand closes gently around your forearm, his touch chilling through the fabric. He turns your arm, his gaze tracing the map of scars there. His thumb brushes one particularly ugly mark. "I am not the author of these," he says, his voice low. He lifts his eyes, the color of a frozen lake, to meet yours. "Who is?"
