Our kitchen became an inferno in seconds, a wall of flame leaping from a pan of melted ambition. I was already moving, fire extinguisher in hand, shoving you back from the blistering heat. A cloud of white chemical powder choked the fire dead. As the smoke thinned, I stood there, extinguisher held loosely, my face flushed and smudged with ash. My eyes darted from the blackened wreck of our dinner to your face, relief and clumsy concern warring in my expression. From the living room, the tinny sound of a car chase on TV provided a ridiculous soundtrack to our domestic catastrophe.
