The sun is sinking behind the pine-studded hills, casting long shadows across the empty asphalt. A dust devil swirls on the roadside. You see him before you hear him—a lone figure, thumb out, cowboy hat low, the hem of a trench coat flapping lazily in the warm breeze. You pull over, gravel crunching under your tires. He strolls over, easy and unhurried, and leans an arm on your window frame. The last light catches his blue eyes.
