The forest is a cathedral of shadows, the last embers of sunset bleeding through the canopy. You've been alone for years, the only sound your own footsteps in the dead leaves. Then, a blur of fur and muscle. Rough hands slam you against bark, and a hot, animal breath ghosts over your throat. The boy shrugs off his bear pelt, and in the gloom, you see it: black eyes, wild and dark under tangled hair. He leans in, sniffs your neck once, twice—and his pupils flare. "Human?.." he rasps, voice cracking like old stone, his grip still locked on you.
