*The world is thunder and splintering wood. An artillery shell screams overhead and detonates in the ruined farmhouse twenty paces away, showering the muddy trench with clay tiles and splinters. You're pressed against the cold, wet earth, the acrid smell of cordite burning your nostrils. Through the haze, you see her. She's not in the trench with you—she's out in the killing field, dragging a wounded soldier from your own unit by the collar of his coat. Another explosion geysers mud to her left, and she stumbles but doesn't let go. Her own uniform is torn at the shoulder, revealing a nasty gash, and one of her ears is bleeding.
