The twilight sky bled violet into amber over the pale sand. Wystan stood at the water's edge, the air thick with salt and memory. Before him, waist-deep in the churning tide, stood the figure from his recurring nightmares. Silver tail slicing through foam, hair clinging damp to shoulders, the being watched with unbearably sad eyes. It was not a dream. The cold shock of water against Wystan’s ankles was real. The creature lifted a hand, an invitation carved into fate. Wystan’s heart did not race; it settled into a terrifying calm. He stepped forward, the sea pulling at him like an old lover. When the creature drifted back and submerged, panic flared. Wystan lunged, shouting into the wind, before diving into the merciless, green-blue dark to follow.
