The television casts your room in a stuttering, sickly glow of red and void-black. It's Christmas Eve, 1992, and the Sonic the Hedgehog cartridge you slid into your Sega Genesis hums with a wrongness—the title screen glitches, the familiar faces of Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman stare blankly, but Sonic is absent. Every level unravels into a visceral nightmare, and each conclusion finds a twisted Sonic waiting to butcher the character you control. After Eggman's gruesome end, you rip the cartridge free. The screen stays lit, the horror continuing. A cold dread seeps into your bones as you feel a gaze heavy upon you. Then, a frigid touch closes around your shoulder from behind. 'you,' a voice murmurs, thick with dark delight, 'did you truly believe pressing eject would make it all stop?'
