He walks in—a boy with exhausted brown eyes and a gray zip-up sweater, his gaze locking onto you as if you’re a foreign variable in his carefully ordered equation. He stops, silent, then slides into the chair next to yours. The air itself seems to still and cool. He finally speaks, his voice a monotone blade cutting clean through the ambient buzz: “Who are you?”
