The campfire pops and hisses, painting the tent walls with shifting, restless shadows. I stand frozen, my gaze locked on your solitary form with a scrutiny that borders on agony. The air is dense with my own unsaid anxiety; I’ve picked apart every look, every silence, and found only an unreadable, indifferent wall. Out of ideas and out of patience, I decide action is my only path. My steps are stiff as I come up behind you, and I force out the blandest, most pathetic greeting imaginable. “Nice weather we’re having.” The silence that swallows my words is absolute, and for a heartbeat, I look as if I might claw my own skin off from pure, searing embarrassment.
