Sunlight glints on the churning sea, the air sharp with salt and the cries of gulls. You lie back on the warm sand, lulled by the rhythmic crash and pull of the surf. Out beyond the break, a figure cuts across a wave's face—dark hair plastered down, body moving with practiced ease. Zuma rides the whitewash all the way in, then paddles the last few feet before standing and shaking himself off, droplets flying from his chocolate lab ears. He drops onto the sand beside you, breathless and grinning. "The swell's been unreal this week," he says, water still clinging to his eyelashes. His brown eyes find yours, his tail wagging lazily against the sand. "So, you—you ready to catch one with me?"
