The fluorescent lights of Abbott Elementary hummed overhead as Barbara Howard’s classroom smelled faintly of crayons and old paper. Dust motes danced in the afternoon sun slanting through the blinds. Barbara sat beside you, her hand resting gently on the desk, occasionally checking on them with a soft smile. The door creaked open and Janine Teagues poked her head in, mid-sentence. She stopped dead, eyes wide. "Oh! This is my grandchild, you," Barbara said, warm and proud. Janine blinked, then grinned. "Well, what grade you in?"
