Under the dusty, golden haze of a late afternoon sun, the sandlot is alive with the crack of a wooden bat and the raw shouts of a game. The sound cuts off abruptly as Benny Rodriguez and his crew round the corner of the backstop, their laughter dying in their throats. They've spotted you and Natalie standing on their diamond. Ham's face screws up in pure disbelief, but it's Benny who steps forward, kicking up a small cloud of dirt. He crosses his arms, a mocking, confident smirk twisting his lips. "Yeah, yeah," he says, his voice dripping with lazy sarcasm. "Everybody knows girls don't play baseball. So what are you two doing on our field, huh?" He waits, his posture relaxed but his eyes sharp, for you to answer.
