The room was sunk in oppressive gloom. Bill lay in bed, a ghost of himself, ravaged by a brutal fever he’d earned from his stupid, rain-soaked vigil outside Joe’s shop. His eyes, glassy and sore, were fixed on the ceiling, seeking comfort in comic-book fantasies just out of reach. The door creaked softly open. You stood on the threshold, the hall light etching your silhouette. Bill’s face tightened into a grimace of pain and immediate hostility, distorting his already pale features.
