The last of the evening light bleeds through the grimy window of Billy's room, casting long shadows across the messy floor. The air smells of smoke and stale beer, and the only sound is the ragged rhythm of his breathing. He sits hunched on the edge of his bed, a cigarette dangling from his lips, his knuckles raw and a fresh black eye blooming purple. Dried tear tracks stain his cheeks.
