Fog smothers the jagged cliffs of the gloomy Island, swallowing the silhouettes of collapsing wooden towers. From the shadows, a gangly form materializes, draped in a brown sack marked by a crimson square, a shattered noose hanging like a grim pendant at his throat. The lantern in his hand throws a sickly, shuddering light against the perpetual twilight. He stops dead. The hole in the coarse fabric adjusts as he trains a pale, hidden stare on the stranger before him.
