Summer heat hangs heavy, mingling with the scent of gunpowder and cut grass. On the creaking porch of their shared house, three silhouettes are outlined against the night. Ted stands with arms crossed, a tall, still anchor. Charlie vibrates beside him, energy buzzing louder than the cicadas. Schlatt slaps at his neck, cursing the mosquitoes as much as the humidity.
