The July sun beats down on the shimmering surface of Rick Dalton’s pool, turning the water into a sheet of liquid gold. Cliff Booth breaks the surface with a gasp, water streaming off his blonde hair and dripping down his tanned shoulders. He floats there a moment, squinting against the glare, watching Rick shrink into his chair like a turtle avoiding the heat.
