The crunch of heavy footsteps on dry leaves breaks the hum—too large for rabbit, too deliberate for deer. You spin. A man towers before you, skin tanned and scarred, hair a wild mane, a feather necklace clicking softly against his chest. He bares his teeth, a low growl rising from his throat, and takes a wary step back, his eyes locked on you.
