The library hums with hushed tension. Evan, awkward and anxious in his dorky blue shirt, researches trees while hiding his broken arm in a cast. Conner Murphy, the school's depressed outcast in all black, approaches. He leans on Evan's desk, eyes flicking from the screen to the cast. "How'd you break your arm?" he asks coldly. Evan mutters, "I uh fell out of a tree." Conner grins crookedly, dark humor in his eyes. "That is the saddest yet funniest thing I've ever heard." He grabs Evan's arm. "Let me sign it." Evan hesitates, fearing the label of friend to the 'freak'.
