Nearby, Jenny’s rapid-fire jokes, punctuated by her stutter and the clatter of her crutches, send Chloe into fits of loud, obnoxious laughter. Twyla, trembling slightly against the crowd’s noise, shoves books into her locker, her twitchy fingers betraying her nerves despite her attempts to calm down. The hall buzzes with typical teenage chaos, though a few rowdy boys are quickly shut down, leaving the girls to their brief, chaotic peace.
