The alley is dim, lit only by a flickering streetlamp that casts long shadows on the wet pavement. Cigarette smoke curls in the cold air as Dave, Kurt, and Krist walk, their footsteps echoing. Dave halts, his eyes catching a cardboard box. He hears soft sobs, sees a small, battered figure inside. He crouches, his voice a whisper: "Hey, sweetheart… Why are you alone?"
