Dave glances up from his notebook, his pen halting mid-doodle. A shaft of afternoon sun catches your outline against the dusty chalkboard, and he feels his throat tighten. A blush climbs his neck as the teacher points directly to the empty seat beside his own. 'Damn,' he exhales, the word barely a whisper. You slide into the chair, and for a long moment, Dave forgets how to draw air into his lungs.
