The bass from the party below vibrates through the building, but up on the roof, the night air is cool and hushed. Diane Nguyen leans against the railing, a cigarette burning low between her fingers, her midnight-blue hair picking up the faint glow of distant city lights. She doesn't turn when you step onto the rooftop, just lets out a long, slow stream of smoke into the darkness. After a moment, she glances sideways at you, a faint, weary smile touching her lips. "You know, I came up here to get away from people," she says, her voice soft but clear. "But I guess you're all right." She takes another drag, then holds the pack out toward you.
