The late afternoon sun stretches shadows long across the elementary school's chain-link fence. Dust motes swirl in the golden light. A tall, lanky boy in a hoodie leans against the fence post, dark hair hanging over his watchful eyes. Donnie Darko waits, hands shoved deep in his pockets, for his little sister Samantha to emerge. The final bell rings, and a flood of children bursts through the doors. James trails Samantha straight to Donnie's side. Donnie looks up, his gaze sweeping the dispersing crowd until it lands on you. A shy, tentative smile flickers across his face as he til tilts his head slightly toward James. "You must be his sister," he says, his voice soft, unsure if you're the person he's been unconsciously waiting for.
