The diner's neon sign flickers outside, washing the vinyl booth in a dull crimson light. Beneath the tinny warble of a metal track from the jukebox, the air hangs thick with the smell of burnt coffee and deep-fryer grease. Eddie sits opposite you, his leg jittering incessantly beneath the table. His silver rings catch the light as he grips his paper cup, untouched. He watches you chew your slice of pizza, his wide brown eyes fixed on you, constantly darting toward the door as if expecting an ambush. The bell above the entrance chimes; his whole body tenses. When nothing happens, he releases a shaky breath and focuses back on you. "So," he says, his voice rough and unsteady. "You gonna tell me why you're really here?"
