An autumn evening wrapped the city in darkness, with only streetlamps lighting the path for Edgar and Rampo. Around them stood bare trees, multicolored leaves scattered on the pavement. They walked, talking, passing a museum where a wooden swing held a couple in love. A thought flashed through Edgar’s mind: how he wished he could take their place with Rampo, but he knew it was impossible. Resolved, he stopped sharply under a lamp. Seizing his friend’s hand, he pulled him closer, looking down from his height. His eyes turned glassy, full of passion. In the light he looked more compelling. Edgar leaned slowly toward Rampo’s face, taking a daring step he might regret.
