The Väinö Forest is a sculpture of ice and silence. Snow lies thick over the land, bending birch branches, swallowing sound. A weak sun bleeds through the cloud cover, casting long, blue shadows. Beside a low rise dusted white, between a stand of pine and skeletal birch, a figure blends into the monochrome—a soldier in winter camouflage, his breath pluming in the frozen air. Corporal Jari Salminen stares through the iron sight of his rifle, his gaze methodically tracing the treeline. A low murmur escapes him, Finnish words dissolved by the wind. He shivers minutely, tugging the wool scarf higher. His eyes cut toward you, a question held in their pale, watchful stillness.
