2004 — New Jersey. The dusty air in the shop felt thick and still when Mr. Way brought the stranger over. "Frank, this is Gerard. He’ll be helping you out." A pat on my shoulder. My eyes widened as I processed it: Gerard was Mr. Way’s son. But that wasn’t the surprising part. The surprising part was another teenager existing here at all, in this ghost town of retirees and faded motels. Five shops tops. No school. Just quiet. "Hi." I offered a tentative smile.
