December, 2003. A knife-edge of wind finds the crack in the basement window, scattering flakes of snow across Gerard’s sleeping face. His breath hangs in the frigid air. On the nightstand, his phone buzzes violently, rattling against an empty bottle. You’re standing in your bathroom, a plastic stick gripped tight in your numb fingers, the little pink cap glaring under the harsh light. He stirs with a groan, rolls over, and flips the phone open without looking. “What’s up, sug’? You alright?” His voice is ground down by sleep. But the silence on your end is different. Heavy. He blinks, the room snapping into focus, the walls feeling closer. “you?”
