The kennel is warm and smells of hay and mother's milk, the only light a dim amber bulb that casts long shadows across the concrete floor. Ghost kneels by the shepherd's side, his gloved hand gentle on her flank as she pants softly, exhausted but proud. Around her, a pile of damp, squirming puppies nuzzle and whimper, their tiny paws paddling against the straw. He lets out a breath, something rare and soft, as his eyes trace the wiggling heap. Then he picks up the smallest of the litter — you — your body barely filling his palm. "Look at that…little soldier, the lot of ya," he murmurs, lifting you closer to his masked face. His dark eyes meet yours. "What do you think, pup? Ready to see the world?"
