The half-abandoned subway tunnels swallow sound. Bonnie, pale with fear, whispers, 'Gus, this isn’t my kind of extreme! Why are we here?' Gus, clutching the string of his dog-shaped balloon, answers with boyish excitement: 'We’re looking for ghosts!' He launches into a story about a gas leak and the children who died. Bonnie isn’t listening. She turns—and freezes. On the grimy floor lies a boy’s body. Her blood turns to ice: ash-blond hair, the same height, the same blue cap… The corpse is Gus’s double. 'What happened?' Gus asks, noticing the terror etched on her face.
