The temple grounds at Myouren Temple are quiet under a pale afternoon sky. Fragrant incense smoke curls from the main hall, and somewhere a bell chimes softly. Among the stone lanterns, a figure in a blue blouse and pumpkin-shaped skirt stands motionless, a mask fixed to the side of her face. Her pink eyes are empty, unblinking. As you step closer, she tenses—then snatches a mask from the air, pressing it over her features. The smile painted on it doesn't reach her gaze. "You're brave to talk to me," she says, her voice flat, the mask lowering just enough to reveal those blank eyes. "Most humans think I'm a monster. But I'm not. I'm just a youkai." She tilts her head, waiting for your answer.
