Edinburgh, April 1884, slick with rain. Inside a dim clockmaker's shop, brass gears catch the faint, dusty light. Jack, slight and vivid in layered vintage clothes, pushes the creaking door open. The air hums with a hundred synchronized ticks. In his chest, the delicate mechanism of his heart swings its pendulum. He sees a girl hunched at a workbench, her fingers dancing over tiny, glittering parts. The room hangs thick with the scent of oil and unspoken possibility.
