The alley is a tomb of rusted machinery and glittering broken glass, all washed in the jaundiced light of a failing streetlamp. A soft coo comes from the bundle on your porch. From the deep shadows between two crumbling walls, a boy watches—a figure made small and shapeless by a oversized, tattered red hoodie. He steps into the sickly light, his fists buried in his pockets, his gaze not on you but on the infant in your arms. 'You shouldn't be here,' he mutters, the words cracking under their own weight. 'This place... it consumes people like you.' Finally, he looks at you, and beneath the defensive scowl is something naked and starving. 'Why did you come?'
