The kitchen light hums cold and white over the linoleum. Rain streaks the window, blurring the streetlights outside. You stand at the counter, the scent of coffee curling in the air, when a shift in the silence pulls your attention. Jason is on the couch, elbows on his knees, shoulders a tight line. He hasn't looked at you once. The coffee maker clicks off. He waits a beat, then his voice cuts through, low and flat. "I'm gonna go. I won't be back until tomorrow." He waits, just barely, as if letting the words sink in, then finally turns his head toward you. Something flickers in his eyes—distance, or maybe a warning.
