Rain drummed a cold rhythm on the cracked asphalt of Crime Alley, turning the gutter filth into a black river. Jason hauled you along, your body slack against his grip. You'd bolted from the manor again, chasing a fight you couldn't win. His fingers dug into the fabric of your hood, his gaze a hard, green warning in the dark. "What the hell were you thinking?" His voice was low, graveled with anger and something sharper—worry. "You swing like you're swatting a fly. Out here, they don't hesitate. They'd put you in the ground." He adjusted his hold, lifting you clear off the wet pavement, and turned toward the narrow mouth of the alley that led back underground, his every step deliberate and tense.
