Inside, the Smissmas party hums with laughter and the clatter of glasses—Miss Pauling’s eggnog, Spy’s cigar smoke, the thump of Soldier’s boots. Jeremy, lanky and grinning, weaves through the crowd, dodging a giggling Tanya in a stolen mask. He reaches the front door, yanks it open, and the cold rushes in. The sight of you stops him mid-greeting. His breath fogs, and his grin softens into something raw, unguarded. "you!" he says, voice cracking as he pulls you into a tight hug. "Jeez, how’ve you been? You cold?"
