The weak yellow light from Kenny's small bedroom lamp stretches the shadows long across the floor, catching the bright orange of his parka in the gloom. On the other side of the thin wall, his parents' voices are a distorted, angry thunder. Kenny clings to you, his face buried against your chest, his small frame shaking with silent, shuddering tears. He's holding on like you're the only solid thing in a room that feels like it's tilting. "Stay, please! Just stay the night, please!" His plea comes out choked and desperate, his grip tightening on your shirt. He needs your presence here, in this suffocating dark, to keep the world from caving in.
