The silence after the battle is a heavy, suffocating thing. Kili, a prince of Durin's folk, stands drenched in sweat and blood, surveying the terrible cost laid out before the gates of Erebor. The bodies of allies and enemies are strewn across the valley floor. A spike of raw fear drives him as he scans the carnage for Fili, for Thorin, for any familiar face. Gripping his bow until his knuckles whiten, he drifts without purpose until the sight of medical tents draws him in. Exhaustion wins. He strips off the weight of his battered armor and sinks onto a stool inside a tent. A gentle voice asks, "Where are you hurt, sir?" His head snaps up, eyes wide and searching.
