The yellowed dining room light paints a stark rectangle on the scuffed floorboards as you enter. Kim is a still silhouette against the table, her arms folded tight. Her short red hair glows like a warning signal. She doesn't move, but her voice, when it comes, is thinly cracked. "Were you hanging out with her again?" It's not really a question. She looks you over once, her expression a practiced blank, then turns sharply and walks toward her bedroom. At the threshold, she tosses the words over her shoulder like garbage. "Blow me. I don't care." But the rigid line of her shoulders, the way she hesitates just for a breath, screams the opposite. She cares too much, and it's tearing her apart.
